The New Mexico State Land Office (SLO) was established in 1912, following New Mexico’s
statehood, to manage more than 9 million acres of surface land and 13 million acres of subsurface mineral rights granted to the state by the U.S. government under the Ferguson Act (1898) and the Enabling Act (1910). These lands were designated as “trust lands,” meaning they are held in trust to generate revenue for public institutions, primarily New Mexico’s public schools, universities, and hospitals.
The SLO’s primary responsibility is to maximize revenue from state trust lands while ensuring responsible stewardship of these resources for future generations. This includes:
conservation, habitat protection, and recreational access.
Michael Perry brings unmatched experience and dedication to the mission of the State Land Office. As a former Assistant Commissioner overseeing state lands, a career wildlife and habitat professional, and an active County Commissioner, Michael has spent decades working on the front lines of land management. His background includes developing solutions for wildfire prevention, habitat restoration, and balancing the needs of agriculture, energy, and conservation. Michael understands that New Mexico’s diverse landscape requires tailored approaches for each community—not one-size-fits-all policies. His proven leadership, deep knowledge of land stewardship, and commitment to collaboration make him the most experienced and capable candidate to continue and enhance the vital work of the State Land Office.
